Rabbits
As rabbits (colloquially also rabbits) is referred to several genera and species from the family of rabbits (Leporidae). There is, however, no concept of biological systematics, as a "rabbit" designated species ever closer to one another than as a "rabbit" designated species. The "rabbit" include:
* The living in the wild wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
* Whose breeding form, the House Rabbit
* As well as a number of other genus and species from the family of rabbits (Leporidae):
O the Ryukyu rabbits (Pentalagus furnessi)
O The Rotkaninchen (Pronolagus) with 3 types
O The Strip rabbits (Nesolagus) with 2 types
O the volcano rabbit (Romerolagus diazi)
O the dwarf rabbits (Brachylagus idahoensis) - the trade in animal offered dwarf rabbits, however, are not representative of this kind, but a variant of domestic rabbits.
O The Baumwollschwanzkaninchen (Sylvilagus) with 14 species
O the bush rabbits (Poelagus marjorita) and
O the bristles rabbits (Caprolagus hispidus).
Systematics details see article hares.

Designation

The term rabbit comes on the altfranzösische "connin" from the Latin word "cuniculus", which both rabbits and "underground passage" or "cave".

Special Note should be mentioned that the country Spain named the Phoenicians owes what on their voyages also to Spain and there were many rabbits upon. This reminded them of their animals at home (the so-called "unrelated" Schaban "(Schliefer), so they called the country" Ishapan ", which the Romans then converted Hispania.
"Rabbits" and "rabbit"

"Rabbit" is not a taxon, "rabbit" - not in the sense of the whole family (Leporidae), but as a group of species or genera - only when they are on the genus of rabbit-doers (Lepus) remains limited. Some species, which Rotkaninchen (Pronolagus), for example, are sometimes referred to as "rabbit", but also occasionally as a "rabbit". Yet there were a number of characteristics lead to decide whether a species as a hare or rabbit called:

* Hares usually have long ears (relative to the head) and stronger hind legs (relative to the total body length) than rabbits.
# Rabbits digging Erdbauten, while rabbits live in a free field and buddeln Sassen.
# Newborn rabbits come naked and blind to the world and are nest stool, while a newborn rabbit fur and open eyes and Nestflüchter.
# Pull rabbits at risk back in their construction; hares lay quite still in their Sasse.
# Live in groups of rabbits, hares are loners.
